Infantile haemangioma (strawberry mark)
Infantile haemangioma, known as a “strawberry mark”, is the most common benign tumour in babies. It is made up of blood vessels and usually appears in the first weeks of life as a red patch that later becomes raised.
How does it evolve?
It grows during the first months, then stabilises and slowly fades over several years. Many need no treatment, only monitoring.
When is it treated?
It is treated when it is close to the eyes, nose or mouth, when it ulcerates, grows very quickly or may leave cosmetic after-effects. Options include topical or oral medication, laser or, in specific cases, surgery. The dermatologist or paediatrician decides on a case-by-case basis.
When to see a dermatologist
An early first assessment is advisable, during the first months, when it grows the most and when treatment, if needed, is most effective.
