Seborrhoeic dermatitis

Seborrhoeic dermatitis

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a chronic inflammation of the skin that causes redness and yellowish or whitish scales. It mainly affects oilier areas: the scalp (dandruff), eyebrows, around the nose, behind the ears and the chest.

Why does it appear?

It is linked to sebum production, a yeast that normally lives on the skin (Malassezia) and each person’s inflammatory response. It often gets worse with stress, cold weather and tiredness. It is not contagious.

How is it treated?

It is a condition that can be controlled, although it may flare up. Treatment includes specific shampoos and gels, antifungal creams and, during flare-ups, topical anti-inflammatories for a few days. The dermatologist sets out an initial treatment and a maintenance plan.

When to see a dermatologist

If over-the-counter products do not work, if there is a lot of itching or if the lesions spread, a consultation helps confirm the diagnosis and tell it apart from psoriasis or other types of dermatitis.
